Nissan Frontier Pro Revealed As All-New Ford Ranger PHEV Rival

The Ford Ranger PHEV – a plug-in hybrid version of the midsize pickup – debuted back in September 2023 for several global markets, including Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. The PHEV pickup segment is getting a bit more crowded now as the Nissan Frontier Pro has been revealed in China, on its way to rival the Ranger PHEV in certain markets worldwide.

Revealed at Auto Shanghai 2025, the Nissan Frontier Pro is Nissan’s first-ever PHEV model, and is also the automaker’s first electrified pickup. It was built with the phrase “rugged tech” in mind, featuring a modernized (if not somewhat boxy) exterior design inspired by pickups from Nissan’s past.

Under the hood, the Nissan Frontier Pro harnesses a turbocharged 1.5L I4 engine mated to a high-output electric motor mounted to the transmission. Combined, the pickup delivers 300kW of power (402 horsepower) and up to 800 Nm of torque (roughly 590 pound-feet). The Chinese market variant is expected to provide 135 km of electric power, unassisted by the gasoline engine. All models feature all-wheel-drive (AWD).

Inside, the Nissan Frontier Pro features a 10-inch LCD instrument cluster paired with a 14.6-inch infotainment screen. The all-new PHEV pickup is expected to go on sale in China by the end of the 2025 calendar year, while it will expand into different global markets later on in its lifecycle.

At this time, there are no plans for the Nissan Frontier Pro to be offered in the U.S. The same is true for the Ford Ranger PHEV, which will not be sold stateside, either. For reference, the Ranger PHEV harnesses the 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost gas engine, which will produce 207 kW of power (278 horsepower), though Ford hasn’t revealed list the combined output when paired with the 75kW electric motor and 11.8kWh battery pack. Production is handled at the Silverton Assembly plant in South Africa, where operations began in March 2025.
