After starting out as a humble comic book, Batman has since gone on to inspire the creation of a TV show and countless movies, which are quite literally ingrained in pop culture at this point. As such, a legion of fans have created their own replicas and tributes to Batman’s famous ride – the Batmobile – in every form that it has existed in over the years, too. That includes the earlier Batmobile – based on the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car that was subsequently customized by the late, great George Barris for the original TV show – and this 1979 Lincoln Continental certainly looks to be pretty close to the real thing in every department.
This particular Batmobile replica is up for auction at Bring a Trailer following a very extensive conversion process that took place under prior ownership, and it certainly looks great in its current guise. It was built using a fiberglass replica body produced by Batrodz of New York, which is mounted to a 1979 Lincoln Continental chassis, and was just repainted in black with red accents and bat emblems last year. The replica rolls on a set of alloy wheels with red bat emblems, too.
Peek inside the open cockpit, and one will find black bucket seats with red piping, Tambour-style panels on the dashboard, toggle-switch controls, a faux radar console, light displays, decorative levers, a Grant steering wheel, and AutoMeter gauges. Power comes from a 400 cubic-inch V8 fitted with an Edelbrock carburetor and Performer intake manifold, which is mated to three-speed automatic transmission.
We’ve certainly seen our fair share of similar Batmobile builds in recent months, which is just a testament to their popularity. That list includes one based on a 1978 Continental, another built using the same model from 1979, and even Batmobile No. 3, an actual example of that car used in the 1966 television series.
