1986 Ford Mustang LX SSP Not Put Into Service Heading To Auction

The Ford Mustang SSP (Special Service Package, as it’s otherwise known) was in production for several years as part of the pony car’s Fox Body generation, and it left quite the impression on law enforcement over that timeframe. The Ford Mustang SSP also became well-known among the many folks that tried to evade one out on the highway, as it was rather good at high-speed pursuits, too. Every so often, we seen one of these beloved law enforcement-focused pony car surface for sale, and now, this 1986 model is joining that list, too.

This particular 1986 Ford Mustang LX SSP is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s upcoming Indianapolis, Indiana sale in May, and it’s quite special for a very good reason – it’s believed to be the only factory Mustang SSP to have never been placed in service. It did wind up landing in private hands, at the very least, as evidenced by its 33k miles that are showing on the odometer, but it remains in excellent, unrestored condition, regardless.

The original white paint looks to be in great shape, as is also the case with the black steel wheels sporting chrome hubcaps and wrapped with Goodyear tires. The same is true of the blue interior, which looks no worse for wear and features amenities such as air conditioning, power steering, and a 140 mph speedometer. Under the hood, one will find the naturally-aspirated Ford 5.0L H.O. V8, originally rated to produce 225 horsepower, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

This rather special Ford Mustang SSP is one of a few that we’ve seen hit the auction block as of late, and every time, those models tend to generate quite a bit of interest among pony car fans. Recently, we’ve seen that happen with a pair of SSPs – one, a modified 1985 model, as well as a more original version of the 1992 police car.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  2. There’s just something special about steelies with chrome center caps and trim rings. It just looks “right”
And this is no exception. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed a Fox with that configuration but this one looks fantastic.
