Just this past April, a 2006 Ford GT owned by what many consider to be the greatest hockey player to ever live – Wayne Gretzky – surfaced for sale with an asking price of $799,990, which may seem like a lot, but in reality, the market for these cars is quite hot at the moment. Throw in the fact that we’re talking about a rare Heritage Edition model with just over 1,000 miles on the clock, and, well, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to see someone purchase this Ford GT and attempt to almost immediately flip it for a profit.
Indeed, that seems to be the case, as this 2006 Ford GT is now up for auction at Bring a Trailer, and as of this writing, has nearly reached its previous list price. It hasn’t accumulated any additional miles over the past few weeks, and is #195 of 343 Heritage Edition examples produced in total, adding to its collectible status. Like the rest, it’s finished in the iconic Gulf-inspired blue and orange livery inspired by the 1968 and 1969 Le Mans-winning GT40. On the doors, one will notice Gretzky’s own number framed in roundels, too – #99.
Inside, this Ford GT Heritage Edition features Ebony leather manually adjusted Sparco seats with carbon-fiber shells with GT40-style ventilation grommets and harness slots, along with the McIntosh CD stereo system, and air conditioning. In terms of power, this Ford GT utilizes the supercharged 5.4L V8 that was factory-rated to produce 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Given its celebrity ownership history and the strong interest in these cars recently – something that wasn’t always the case – we don’t doubt that it’ll find another new owner soon, in spite of its lofty asking price. We also wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the person that purchased it just a few weeks ago makes off with a tidy profit, either.
