Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Expedition sales fell 37 percent to 13,482 units, placing third in its segment, behind all of GM’s models – the Tahoe/Suburban and Yukon/Yukon XL duos. Note that sales of the Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) include those of the regular-length Expedition and the extended-length Expedition Max.

The regular-length Chevy Tahoe and extended-length Suburban continue to lead the segment on a combined basis, which has been the case for well over two decades. Sales of the duo grew 32 percent to 43,421 units, comprised of:

  • 29,827 units of the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales), up 28 percent to place first in the segment, and
  • 13,594 deliveries of the extended-length Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) shot up 40 percent, placing third

Second place went to the regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales) and the extended-length GMC Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales), which are combined this quarter to account for 23,324 sales, up 29 percent.

The Expedition followed in fourth. The Jeep Wagoneer family, comprised of both the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer) took fifth with a 60 percent drop to 5,400 units. The Toyota Sequoia placed sixth with a 14 percent dip to 5,107 units, while the Nissan Armada finished last with a two percent drop to 3,910 units.

The Expedition earned a cumulative 14 percent segment share, down nine percentage points. The Tahoe and Suburban combined for a 46 percent share, breaking out to a 32 percent share for the Tahoe and 14 for the Suburban. The Yukon and Yukon XL earned a cumulative 25 percent. The Wagoneer and Wagoneer L combined for a six percent share, the Sequoia posted a five percent share, and the Armada held a four percent share.

TOTAL +31.55% 43,421 33,008

As noted above, sales of the Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer and GMC Yukon combined on a single line sales figures for the regular-length models (which compete with the Tahoe/Yukon) and their extended-length variants (that compete with the Suburban/Yukon XL). Meanwhile, Tahoe and Suburban sales are reported separately.

To make things a bit more bitter for Ford, the four rivaling nameplates from crosstown rival, GM, accounted for 66,745 deliveries for a dominant 71 percent segment share, representing nearly three-fourths of all sales in this space. That represents a nearly 20 percentage point jump on a year-over-year basis.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment contracted one percent to 94,644 deliveries in Q1 2025, meaning that Ford Expedition sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

Down 37 percent, Ford Expedition sales during Q1 2025 suffered a significant drop, one that was second only to the 59 percent cliff plunge suffered by the Jeep Wagoneer. We attribute the performance to a generational changeover of the redesigned 2025 Ford Expedition, a typical scenario not only for Ford, but for the auto industry at large, which usually results in a drop in inventory and sales volume. The circumstance can last anywhere from several months to a year, depending on how quickly production of the all-new model can ramp up to restock inventories at dealers.

The new Expedition only started to arrive at dealers in late March, and its true sales impact won’t be realized until Q2 and beyond. The new Ford model is facing stiff competition from GM’s stable of updated SUVs from Chevy and GMC, which were the only entries in the green this quarter. The General refreshed its full-sizers for the 2025 MY as the 2025 Chevy Tahoe and 2025 Chevy Suburban along with 2025 GMC Yukon and 2025 GMC Yukon XL.

Once the new Expedition has fully launched, we expect it to compete much more favorably than the outgoing model. To us, a welcome boost in sales volume later in the year wouldn’t be far-fetched.

Refreshed 2025 Ford Expedition Platinum Ultimate with class-exclusive Split Gate

About Ford Expedition

The redesigned 2025 Ford Expedition arrives with an all-new Tremor variant and class-exclusive Split Gate, plus revamped exterior styling, new features, and an overhauled interior. Available in regular and extended-length Max variants, trim levels get simplified to just four, including the new base-model Active, King Ranch, Platinum, and the first-ever Tremor variant, which replaces the Timberline and is not available in the Max variant. All trims are three-row.

For 2025, the entire lineup sports fresh styling both up front and in the rear, and a convenient new feature called Ford Split Gate, which functions much like a regular tailgate on a pickup. The top three-quarters of the liftgate raises upward, while the lower portion folds down, able to support up to 500 pounds. The Split Gate also features a seatback as part of the optional Cargo Tailgate Manager, and can even transform into a serving table.

Inside the cabin, the biggest change in the refreshed full-size SUV is the addition of a new 24-inch panoramic display that doubles as the instrument cluster and is paired with an 13.2-inch center screen running the fairly new Ford Digital Experience software.

Here are available 2025 Expedition paint colors after three were dropped, and wheels that are offered.

Also, we explain the Stealth Packages and tell you everything you need to know regarding grilles for the 2025 Expedition. The base-model Active trim offers just one package.

Available powertrains continue to include the twin turbocharged 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine, which produces 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, or 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet in the high-output version, which is standard in the Tremor and optional on Platinum.

  • The new model didn't stop sales. The reason it's not selling is that they are trying to charge 75k for an SUV that is only worth 48k with no special financing.

  • Just received my 2025 Expedition. It is the finest Ford vehicle in my 30 years of driving Fords.

  • I would imagine sales would pick up briskly if you could order one with a 7.3L engine! Just saying!

  • Over priced it's still a FORD!
EcoCrap engine [needs V8] so so many problems with the EcoCrap no one trusts it anymore,
tail gate is poor designed, Can't drive with tailgate open can't see the tag.
the dash is NOT piratical {looks stupid]

  • They should make a shorter length model ( like the Everest in Australia ), and ditch about 10 grand worth of electronics. Give it the big info screen, and basic amentities like 6 way seats, A/C, Cruise control, Power Windows, Fold in Mirrors, and back up cameras, then offer it with long term financing. If someone want all bells an whistles, buy a Lincoln.

  • Priced WAY too high for it, no V8 option, and tbh the front end looks bad. I don't even look at vehicles that gave up on V8s anymore.

  • As a loyal Ford customer, I would have a difficult time buying an Expedition because of lack of engine choices. Ford could expand sales if they offered the 5.0 V-8, in my opinion.

    • I agree totally. Some people just want a v8 and are much about gas mileage. More choices, more sales. The GM twins has the v8 option advantage.

  • The GM vehicles cost about the same but come with a V8. Ford has done the same thing to this that they did with the Mustang and other vehicles…bloated, too much “standard” content, poor reputation for QC, and too damned expensive. You don’t have to be a MENSA member to figure this out. Bigger engine, make more equipment optional, beef up warranties, and knock down the price.

  • Where are the 2025s my dealer said in November January than Ck back in march it’s now almost June and still none and the tremor model is loaded with every single power tilt heated this and that with memory it’s $84k it’s more 3 row luxury family school bus
