Ford Patent Could Help People Listen To Music In Garages

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a system and method for targeted communication that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on November 28th, 2023, published on May 29th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0175261.

The Ford Authority Take

Roughly one year ago, Ford published a patent for an adaptive loudspeaker system, which could receive a message, determine the direction of the person it’s intended to be sent to, move itself accordingly, and then set the volume to a level where they can actually hear it. The idea is to compensate for ambient noise in areas like construction zones, helping to better communicate with workers. Now, this newly published patent presents us with a similar idea, this time, for a system and method for targeted communication.

As Ford points out in this patent, headphones have become popular as a way to listen to things like music or sound from TVs/movies without disturbing others, but when one is working from a place like their garage, it isn’t always convenient to do so for a long period of time. Modern headphones also tend to have noise cancellation features that filter out background noises, which could present a problem if there’s a child or pet in the garage.

As such, Ford proposes this system, which is designed to detect the presence of a child, pet, or other object in the garage, as well as the frequency of sound that the system is emitting, such as from music. From there, it could ensure that sound continues to play as desired, but also in a manner that doesn’t disturb the neighbors or muffle the sounds of others nearby.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
