Ford-Powered De Tomaso P72 Debuts As First New Model In 20 Years

Most Ford fans remember De Tomaso, makers of the mid-engine Pantera supercar that was produced from 1971 to 1993 and utilized a variety of Blue Oval powerplants over that timeframe. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, that same company debuted the new De Tomaso P72 – powered by a supercharged version of the Ford 5.0L V8 Coyote engine – at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and announced that it expected production of that new model to begin in 2022. That obviously never happened, and now, years later, the official production version of the De Tomaso P72 has finally made its debut.

Riding on a brand new, carbon fiber chassis, the De Tomaso P72 also utilizes a carbon fiber body that’s available in a variety of heritage-inspired paint schemes, or simply in natural form. Inside, the analog-focused ride ditches much of the digital revolution that has taken place in modern day supercars by opting for zero screens, no infotainment system, and replacing all of that with analog dials and bespoke switchgear – such as an exposed linkage shifter. The cabin is a real work of art too, featuring hand-stitched leather and machined metal throughout.

As previously mentioned, power for the De Tomaso P72 comes from a version of the Ford 5.0L V8 Coyote engine that’s been hand-assembled with forged internals and a supercharger to churn out 700 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There are no drive modes or other fancy tech features here, and underneath, the chassis features a push-rod suspension setup with three-way manually adjustable dampers to provide stout handling.

Just 72 examples of the De Tomaso P72 will be built in total, each to the customer’s specifications, with deliveries expected to begin later this year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the new, analog-focused supercar is expected to easily eclipse the million-dollar mark, at least.
