The Ford Puma has long dominated the passenger vehicle sales charts in the UK, having ranked as the top-selling new model of that type in both 2023 and 2024. However, the Puma lost some momentum as last year wore on, giving up considerable ground to the Kia Sportage and barely edging it out for the sales crown last year. In January 2024, the Ford Puma actually slipped all the way down to seventh place, and in February, it fell even further – to tenth place. However, the Puma did manage to regain first place in March before slipping slightly in April.
According to new data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT), the Ford Puma fell back down to second-place in passenger vehicle sales in the UK last month, trailing the Kia Sportage by a small margin – 3,311 sales versus 3,514. However, the Puma retained its spot atop the UK sales charts through the first four months of the year, regardless, posting 18,241 sales, while the Sportage ranks second with 16,380.
As for the overall UK new vehicle market, sales dropped by 10.4 percent in April, coming in at 120,331 units – its sixth month of declines out of the past seven. EV sales did rise by 8.1 percent, though market share for pure electric vehicles stood at 20.4 percent, which trails requirements set forth by the country’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. PHEV sales rose by 34.1 percent month-over-month, but every other powertrain type experienced some sort of drop – hybrids losing 2.9 percent, followed by ICE models at 22 percent and diesels at 26.2 percent.
“April’s performance is disappointing but expected after March’s surge,” said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. “Another month of growth for electric vehicle registrations is good news, however, even if demand remains well below ambition. Recent government adjustments to flexibilities and compliance within the ZEV Mandate are welcome and an important first step in relieving some of the pressure on the market and manufacturers. However, EV uptake is still being heavily and unsustainably subsidized by the industry which is why a compelling package of measures from government is essential if consumers are going to make the switch.”
