The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed quite a few patents lately that present us with various ways our future pickups may be more capable in terms of carrying cargo, a list that includes ideas such as a flatbed cargo management system, a multifunction bed extender, and a cross bar attachment for base plate systems, to name just a few. With lots of folks using their vehicles to transport bicycles these days, it seems as if future Ford pickup owners might get a new way to do precisely that as well, if this newly published patent for a rotatable bicycle fork mount comes to reality.

In this case, Ford envisions mounting a rotating bike mount in the bed of a pickup – not behind it, as is the case with hitch mounts. As the automaker points out in the patent filing, smaller trucks oftentimes don’t fit bicycles in the bed very well, but if we can simply turn it diagonally and remove the front wheel, perhaps one would. Thus, this patent presents us with a simple yet potentially useful idea – why not add a mount that enables us to place a bicycle in the bed of a pickup, secure it via the front fork, and then pivot it to enable us to latch the tailgate in place?

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
