Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for camera tampering detection tech that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on May 21st, 2021, published on April 29th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12288413.
The Ford Authority Take
The number of cameras present in modern vehicles has grown substantially in recent years, and they’re used for everything from providing us with a view around those vehicles to security purposes and even for driving-assistance and safety features. In recent months, Ford has filed several camera- and security-related patents aiming to innovate in this space, giving us ideas for things like a hidden camera detection system, an Internet of Things interference detection system, and a parts theft detection system. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for camera tampering detection tech that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
Here, Ford envisions a future in which facial recognition technology will be prevalent in new vehicles, enabling us to gain access in a secure and convenient manner. If that does happen, there will undoubtedly be some that attempt to tamper with those cameras to gain access to vehicles as well, which is where this tech would come into play. The camera would be able to obtain images and then compare them to those stored in its database, and determine if they’re legitimate by comparing “noise values,” then granting or denying access based on those results.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
