The Ford Authority Take

Ford has toyed around with more than one way to make use of crowdsourced data in its future vehicles, publishing patents for ideas such as a flexible notification system that could display all kinds of information in a clearer manner, as well as an ice and snow warning system that could help make us better winter weather drivers. Now, this newly published patent presents us with an idea for crowdsourced weather detection technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

The concept behind this new patent filing is to use weather information gathered from vehicles in different areas, providing a more accurate forecast that drivers can rely on. The system would utilize sensors to do so, which would constantly gather weather data and then share it with other vehicles, which could certainly be useful for a number of reasons. This way, one could easily see precisely where they might incur things like rain, snow, ice, or even more severe weather events like tornadoes, if – of course – this technology does in fact come to fruition in future Ford vehicles.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
