Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a vehicle sound ordinance control system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 21st, 2023, published on May 22nd, 2025, and assigned serial number 0166598.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas including a sound emulation system that would alert bystanders to the presence of hybrids and EVs, as well as an adaptive pedestrian alert system that aims to do the same sort of thing – albeit, while adjusting the volume of those alerts based on ambient noise. Now, this newly published patent presents us with a new idea, this time, for a vehicle sound ordinance control system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
If this particular idea came to fruition, future Ford vehicles could automatically adjust the sounds that they make – whether that be from the engine/exhaust, tires, horn, or audio system based on local noise ordinances, with the idea that it would prevent the vehicle’s user from getting a ticket for violating those laws. It would determine this by using a microphone designed specifically to measure noise levels, and if they exceed preset thresholds, the system would alert the driver and take action to quiet things down – literally speaking – if the system does in fact become a reality one day.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
