Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a security card tracking system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 29th, 2023, published on May 29th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0174061.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas such as a vehicle access card with a display, hideable security keys, and a remote keyless entry method that uses NFC key cards, all of which are centered around one concept, in particular – making the act of gaining access to a vehicle a bit more secure. Now, this newly published patent continues to expand that list with a new idea – this time, for a security card tracking system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
Here, Ford envisions a system that would use a security token as a way to prevent something like an NFC access card or NFC-capable phone from being left inside of a vehicle when the owner exits it, which could leave that vehicle open to theft. The system would accomplish this by using images and location tracking as it pertains to the device the user relies on to gain access to and operate the vehicle. If the user exits that vehicle without taking their key card or phone with them, the system would alert them that this is the case, and even help them locate the device if needed.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
