NASCAR Ford Mustang Mach-E Prototype Runs Laps At Wilkesboro: Video

The Ford Mustang Mach-E NASCAR prototype debuted earlier this year to a lukewarm reception. Motorsports fans across the board just aren’t excited about the prospect of all-electric vehicles taking to the track in place of loud, gut-rattling gasoline powerhouses. Despite the vitriol, NASCAR is slowly introducing EV racers to the fans, including showing off off the Mustang Mach-E prototype at North Wilkesboro Speedway ahead of the 2025 All-Star Race, turning the electric pony out for a few hot laps around the historic track.

Cup Series driver David Ragan, who has his fair share of experience driving Ford race cars, took the wheel of the Ford Mustang Mach-E prototype for a few laps at North Wilkesboro on Sunday, May 18th, 2025. Smith tested the unbranded NASCAR EV prototype – which was built in collaboration with ABB Group, a global leader in electrification – at Martinsville not too long ago.

“It’s been fun to drive something that’s different, that’s new, that looks different,” Ragan said at the time of the Martinsville test. “It has a lot of technology with the way you can adjust the race car, so that was fun. Just to make laps, it was different.”

Ragan laid down a few laps to show off the Ford Mustang Mach-E racer to fans at North Wilkesboro before performing a burnout in front of the grandstands. But worry not – EV racing isn’t coming for the Cup Series (or any national series, for that matter) anytime soon.

The Mustang Mach-E is a prototype racer that’s part of The Blue Oval’s demonstrator class. And even if it does make it to the track, it will likely get its own support series rather than take the place of any of the national series.

Ford, for its part, is not pushing for the electrification of motorsport. The Blue Oval understands how to connect with its fans, and it knows that what its fans want is loud, earsplitting race cars, at least for now.

    1. NOPE! NASCAR is being modernized. This is the EV century.

  2. Good luck. Abandoning your current audience for what you think is the “modern audience” has NOT worked out well for the entertainment industry, at all.

  3. GM has its own EV racer beinhg tested. It was supposed to be the pace car for the Daytona 500 but the Orange Top came and took that position in his Beast Limousine.

    1. That was never the case. The pace car was the roadgoing Blazer EV. The EV.R was on display at the track but it was never slated to pace the field to green.
