Defending champion Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse, managed to survive a series of late-race wrecks, cautions, and subsequent restarts to win at Texas Motor Speedway on May 4th, 2025. The victory comes just one week after Logano’s race car was disqualified from a top-five finish at Talladega due to an illegal spoiler.
That means Logano’s Texas victory marked his first official top-five result of 2025. It wasn’t an easy win for the driver of the No. 22 NASCAR Ford, who snagged the lead from Michael McDowell with just four laps left. Logano swung low, avoiding a block and a charge from McDowell’s No. 71 Chevy, sweeping into the lead. McDowell continued to slip, falling in behind Logano’s teammate, the No. 12 Mustang of Ryan Blaney, who upset McDowell’s race car as he slapped the wall.
Even after taking the lead, Logano still had to fend off the field in an Overtime restart as a wreck triggered a late-race caution. He managed to outrun Blaney and the Chevy of Ross Chastain through the final two laps, finishing 0.346 seconds ahead of Chastain at the line.
“The sport changes so quickly,” Logano said after the race. “It’s crazy how you can just ride these rollercoasters and just proud of the team. Finally got (sponsor) AAA Insurance into Victory Lane. They’ve been a partner of mine since I’ve been to Penske, so 13, 14 years. I’ve yet to win with them. It was awesome to get that done here.”
Logano started 27th, methodically picking his way through the field to get to the front.
Chastain finished second, while Blaney finished third. The Chevy of Kyle Larson slotted in fourth, followed by the Toyota of Erik Jones rounding out the top five.
Another NASCAR Ford driver, Josh Berry, wasn’t so lucky. Berry’s No. 21 Mustang led 41 laps and was in the lead when his race car suddenly snapped around after hitting the infamous front stretch bump, slamming the wall and dealing serious damage to his race car. His team was able to make repairs so he could finish the race, but all he had was a 32nd-place result to show for it.
“I don’t know what I would do too much different,” Berry said. “Obviously, in these cars, especially at a place like this, if you’re going to be fast, it’s going to be uncomfortable and you’re going to be on edge. Unfortunately, it bit us today.”
Comment
Logano’s car was disqualified after the previous race due to one of the dozen or so bolts attaching the rear spoiler being loose.
