When the term “Fox Body” pops up, the first vehicle that comes to mind is the third-gen Ford Mustang, but it was far from the only vehicle that utilized the platform. The 1985 Mercury Capri Motorsport is one such machine, and as it turns out, it’s quite the rare piece of Blue Oval history.
YouTuber REVan Evan recently cast a spotlight on the 1985 Mercury Capri Motorsport. His guest, Jason, is well-versed in all things Capri Motorsport, giving a brief overview of the model while attending the 2025 Carlisle All-Ford Nationals. Each Capri Motorsport wears the same white-and-red livery for a reason: they were all Detroit dealer drive-aways. Only 54 examples of the muscle car were produced for the program for the 1985 Mercury Motor-City 100 and Detroit Grand Prix races.
The special edition Capri was based on the Roush Protofab Capris that dominated the SCCA Trans Am race series during the 1984 and 1985 seasons – hence the Motorcraft-inspired paint schemes. While most were white, there were three units painted silver, delivering some variety to the muscle car’s lineup. Most featured a gray interior, though a handful were treated to a red interior. Meanwhile, only 12 had T-tops, five with sunroofs, while the rest of the 54 featured solid roofs.
While most examples of the 1985 Mercury Capri Motorsport were kept in pristine condition, there are a few on display that weren’t so well-kept. One, for instance, was abandoned in a barn and developed a nice patina and rust. Another faced a similar fate, but was restored as close to its original condition as its owner could get it.
“You’d be lucky to see even one of these cars, maybe, somewhere at a show,” Evan says. “Seeing them all together is kind of a neat deal.” Jason notes that the gathering is the first time a large number of these rare muscle cars have been together since the 1985 drive-away program.
Though not part of the Motorsport drive-away program, a unique 1986 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren crossed the digital auction block late last year.
