The Mercury Capri existed for more than two decades, but it also changed quite bit over that timeframe. Originally added to the lineup as a sporty, compact model, the Mercury Capri later morphed into an alternative to the Fox Body Mustang before taking a few years off and then returning as a small, two-door roadster designed to compete with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Recently, we’ve begun to see more and more later Mercury Capri models surface for sale at auction, and now, this gem is now joining them.
This 1991 Mercury Capri XR2 is up for grabs over at Bring a Trailer with just 28k miles on the clock, and it has remained in the possession of the same family since it was sold new. Now, the Cardinal Red convertible is being auctioned off as a stellar example of its breed, though there is just one slight problem – it was rear-ended back in 2007 and subsequently repaired, but the driver-side window is misaligned and can’t be closed completely.
Otherwise, there aren’t too many bones to pick here, as the interior is in fantastic condition with gray cloth seats and amenities including air conditioning, cruise control, a cassette stereo, and power windows, door locks, and mirrors. Power comes from the turbocharged 1.6L inline-four cylinder engine that was factory rated to send 132 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.
This is just the latest in a long line of nicely kept, low-mile Mercury Capri XR2 models we’ve seen hit the auction block in recent months, interestingly enough. That list also includes a 1991 model with 60k miles, another ’91 with a mere 16k miles on the odometer, and a 1992 with 24k miles, though all three of them were also finished in Cardinal Red, a truly popular color option during this particular era.

Based on a proven Mazda platform, this was a nice car let down by frumpy styling and a reputation for shoddy build quality. Getting replacement parts from Australia didn’t help.
The colour is actually called Le Man’s Red…Cardinal Red was a metallic Red. I should know as I worked at Ford Broadmeadows (Australia) on the Capri line from 1989 to 93 and also in the Paint plant .
