The Ford Excursion was discontinued back in 2005, which was unfortunate for people who are looking for a full-size SUV that has enough room not only for larger families, but also, the ability to tow incredibly heavy loads as well. These days, no automaker sells anything like the Excursion, which was basically an SUV version of the Ford Super Duty, either. That means folks interested in such a machine must either look to purchase some sort of conversion from a third-party – which can be quite pricey – or find one on the used market, which is precisely where this unique Ford Excursion is currently up for grabs.
This 2001 Ford Excursion XLT isn’t some stock example of the massive SUV, but rather, a former fire rescue truck employed by the Red Bud Fire Department in Illinois. It’s now up for auction at Bring a Trailer with 61k miles on the clock and still wearing its firefighting livery, consisting of a white stripe and department logos on the doors. There are also some telltale signs such as an emergency light bar, sirens, and a Kussmaul Electronics Auto Eject power input connector adorning the exterior.
Inside the cabin, this Ford Excursion fire rescue vehicle features Medium Graphite cloth seating and a variety of upfitted goods such as a handheld radio and an emergency light/siren control panel, coupled with amenities including power-adjustable front seats, a CD stereo, cruise control, and air conditioning. Power comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 6.8L Triton V10 engine, which was factory rated at 310 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
We’ve certainly seen our fair share of interesting Ford Expedition models pop up for sale as of late, including a very nice, 18k-mile 2001 model and a 2002 XLT with an even lower 15k miles. For those in the market for something a bit more custom and fancier, we even came across precisely that back in April in the form of an Excursion executive limo, too.
