One of the bigger complaints folks have about all-electric vehicles is the fact that they lack a bit of soul, which is largely due to the lack of sound produced by their mostly silent electric powertrains. We’re just used to hearing the roar of our ICE engines as we push the throttle further to the floor, and that same experience is something that automakers have been trying to replicate in EVs for some time now. As for longtime exhaust system maker Borla, it rolled out its own EV performance sound system back in 2022, and now, it’s working on the next-generation version of that offering.
The Borla Performance Sound System for the Ford Mustang Mach-E made its debut nearly three years ago with one goal in mind – to make the EV sound like a traditional muscle car. To do that, it uses a proprietary algorithm that takes into consideration the vehicle’s speed, power, RPM, torque, and load to generate realistic engine noises using professional recordings of actual Borla exhaust-equipped ICE vehicles equipped with multiple microphones.
Unlike a traditional exhaust system, users can also change the sounds with the twist of a knob, changing the actual character of that feedback in the process and even modifying those sounds to suit their own taste. Now, Borla is working on the next generation version of its Performance Sound System, which it’s teasing in this particular video. The new Active Performance Sound System features a “massively improved” DSP module with vastly better computing power as well.
Users will be able to control the new system via an app as well, which should make it much easier and more convenient to play around with – inside or outside of the vehicle itself. It’s going to be offered across a wide array of EV models and will be updated continuously, with more control promised, to boot. It’s an interesting upgrade that’s been in the works for some time now, and we’re curious to see how it all pans out once the new Borla Active Performance Sound System is ready to go.

It is still stupid…
The most childish thing I have ever heard of. EV's are the most powerful and fastest vehicles on the street. I'll take all power, no noise over the all noise no motion ice vehicles you see so often these days
I clipped playing cards on my bike to make "motor" noises when I was 9, but I've gotten over that. Quiet is one of the selling points of EVs.
No thank you!
