Each year, Cars.com releases its American Made Index, which aims to shed some light on what new vehicles are, well, the most American, in a variety of ways. In that regard, The Blue Oval has had quite a few different models make the cut in recent years, which makes sense given its strong American presence, in general. However, the 2025 Cars.com American Made Index was just released, and interestingly enough, there isn’t a single Ford model present in the top 20 this time around.
Now in its 20th year, the 2025 Cars.com American Made Index uses the same criteria that it always has, and this time around, the company analyzed roughly 400 different vehicles on sale to determine just how American they truly are, and from that group, Cars.com selected the 99 top options. To come up with the American Made Index (AMI) score for each, it looks at five different factors – the location(s) of final assembly, percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, countries of origin for all available engines and transmissions, and each company’s U.S. manufacturing workforce.
From there, Cars.com ranks each model on a 100-point scale, though it doesn’t reveal its exact methodology for doing so. Since some vehicles are produced in multiple plants in different locations, it accounts for that with scoring reductions for imported volume, and determines the percent of U.S. and Canadian content from the American Automobile Labeling Act, taking into account engine and transmission origins as well.
As has been the case for some time now, Tesla dominated the top of the AMI rankings with the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X claiming the first four spots. The top 10 was rounded out by the Jeep Gladiator, Kia EV6, Honda Ridgeline, Honda Odyssey, Honda Passport, and Volkswagen ID.4. However, there wasn’t a single Ford or Lincoln model in the top 20 this time around, with the Ford F-150 Lightning being the highest in 22nd place. It isn’t a huge shift from last year, however, as the Ford Mustang ranked 31st on the 2024 version of this study, while the Ford F-150 ranked 58th.

And the Jim podcasts still saying Ford is the most American brand ahahahahaha
Ford is going down the toilet courtesy of super Jim Farley!
Perhaps Ford should spend less on commercials and train stations and more on expanding its manufacturing base in the United States. It’s embarrassing when a so-called imports have more domestic content than the All-American car company Ford.
I wouldn’t put much credence in this tally. It’s been a world market for decades. Why would this make any difference. The difference is in the overall quality of the finished product. Jeep and lately Kia have some of the worst reputations when it comes to to quality. What’s the relationship again?
Another survey article I read last week from one of the national news services indicated that as an company product line collectively Tesla was #1, Ford was #@. So which is correct? Likely both. from some perspective.
Sorry. Ford was #2.
I looked at the full list. There is a mistake: the F150 may be built in Dearborn but not in Kansas City, Kansas: it’s Claycomo, Missouri. Unless the GM Fairfax plant has started building Fords, Cars.com may be getting other details wrong.
