Ford Puma UK’s Best Selling Vehicle Of May 2025

The Ford Puma has dominated new passenger vehicle sales charts in the UK for a long time now, finishing first in both 2023 and 2024. Things softened later in 2024 as the Puma lost ground to the Kia Sportage and barely edged it out for the sales crown last year, and kicking off 2025, that continued as the Ford Puma slipped down to seventh place in January, and in February, it fell even further – to tenth place. However, the Puma did manage to regain first place in March before falling behind the Sportage in April, though that back and forth continued in May.

According to new data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT), the Ford Puma once again topped the passenger vehicle sales charts in the UK last month, moving 3,695 units – giving it a healthy lead over the second-place Kia Sportage and its 3,256 sales. In terms of year-to-date sales through the first five months of the year, the Puma also holds onto first place with 21,936 sales, compared to the Sportage and its 19,636 units sold.

As for the overall UK new car market, registrations rose 1.6 percent to 150,070 units last month, its best May performance since 2021. However, that figure is also 18.3 percent lower than it was in pre-pandemic 2019, and only the second month of growth this year thus far in a turbulent market. Commercial fleets and businesses largely drove this growth, posting increases of 3.7 percent and 14.4 percent, accounting for 62.6 percent of registrations, while retail sales fell 2.3 percent. Gas and diesel cars posted drops of 12.5 percent and 15.5 percent, while demand for electrified models increased to claim a combined 47.3 percent market share. However, BEV registrations currently trail a mandated 28 percent market share, coming in at 20.9 percent year-to-date.

“A return to growth for new car registrations in May is welcome but manufacturer discounting on new products continues to underpin the market, notably for electric vehicles,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “This cannot be sustained indefinitely as it undermines the ability of companies to invest in new product development – investments which are integral to the decarbonization of all road transport. Next week’s Spending Review is the opportunity for government to double down on its commitments to Net Zero by driving demand through fiscal measures that boost the market and shore up our competitiveness.
