Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an active heat sharing system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on December 29th, 2023, published on June 5th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0178400.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has published patents for ideas including an external heating feature for EVs, as well as a heated window system for EVs, giving us different ideas of how versatile electric vehicles might one day be in that regard. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going, this time, with a rather interesting idea for an active heat sharing system that may be used in future Ford EVs as a way to share heat between the cabin and battery pack.
As many are already well aware, EV battery packs tend to be less efficient in colder temperatures, which is precisely why automakers recommend using pre-heat functions that warm them up before a scheduled departure. At the same time, using the heat inside of an EV can also be a drain on the battery pack, so there is clearly a need to share it between the two. In this case, Ford proposes a way to do precisely that, based on the thermal temperature of the battery pack. This way, a thermal management system could be used to either circulate heat between the battery and heater core, or vice versa.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
