Future Ford Pickups Could Get Cab Mounted Handles

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for cab mounted handles that may be used in future Ford pickups, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 12th, 2023, published on June 12th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0187515.

The Ford Authority Take

As Ford Authority exclusively reported prior to its debut, the redesigned 2023 Ford Super Duty added integrated steps to its rear bumper, which are designed to make it easier to climb up and reach items that are in the bed area, or to simply get into the bed itself. However, as one might imagine, there are other ways to make that type of task a bit simpler and easier on the body, and this new patent filing might just preview one of them in the form of cab-mounted handles that could wind up on future Ford pickups as well.

This particular patent filing is a rather simple one, and merely depicts a set of handles that would be mounted to the rear/side pillar portion of the cab. There, Ford proposes installing a box rail that would be secured to the pillar, and that piece would be capable of serving as a mounting point for these handles, or perhaps even other types of accessories. In this case, the handles are mounted so that they face backward, making it presumably easier to enter the cab from the side, if one opts to do so.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
