Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a low power secure access system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on February 14th, 2022, published on June 17th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12331561.

The Ford Authority Take

Back in May, Ford published a patent presenting us with an idea for a security card tracking system, which would give us a way to prevent something like an NFC access card or NFC-capable phone from being left inside of a vehicle when the owner exits it, potentially leaving that vehicle open to theft. It’s just one of many recent patent filings that explores different ways future Ford vehicles could be more secure than existing ones, and now, this newly published piece of intellectual property keeps that trend going with a new idea for a low power secure access system.

In this case, Ford envisions a scenario in which a vehicle may have a low state of charge in its battery, which could pose a problem in regard to using things like Phone As A Key functionality, or NFC-based devices that require electrical power to function properly. As one might imagine, that isn’t exactly ideal in the event that one isn’t able to access their vehicle. Thus, this patent filing explores the concept of monitoring the level of battery charge, and if it gets too low, the system could receive power from an external source.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

  • Great idea. Since the 12V battery in my Fusion can't stand temps below 30, I'm tired of being locked out and then having to deal with the idiotic door handle cover that takes me 1/2 an hour to remove every time.

    • I have a 2014 Fusion Hybrid, and once I opened the door with the fob key. Thst cover comes off in seconds. Maybe you have gloved hands or cannot see the small key slot.

  • Why such a complex sydtem? Just supply an external 12 V port either at the front or the rear that can power only the door system. A pair of diodes and new wiring will do it for a few dollars.
