Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for seats with LED lighting that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 15th, 2023, published on June 19th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0196766.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has explored the idea of adding new and interesting lighting elements to its future models via several recent patent filings, both inside and out. Those filings include ideas for things like brighter interior lighting systems, charging cords with LED lighting, and an LED light blade setup, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent presents us with an idea for seats with LED lighting that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

This new patent is yet another extension of Ford’s desire to improve interior lighting in vehicles, which is quite lacking at the moment, for the most part. In this case, it proposes simply adding LED lighting elements to the seats via a flexible cover, which could cover either the top or bottom portion of the seat, as desired. Those lighting elements would receive electrical power via connections in the seats, helping to provide a little more light when desired. It’s an interesting concept for certain, and yet another location that future Ford vehicles might employ lighting elements inside the cabin as well.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
