Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a passenger compartment seating adjustment system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 13th, 2025, published on June 5th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0178488.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas including an automatically adjusting seat for pets, a configurable interior, and auto adjustable seats based on rear occupancy, all amid the automaker’s quest to make its future models a bit more useful or accommodating inside the cabin. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going, this time, with a new idea that could use images to make adjustments to a vehicle’s interior automatically.
In today’s world, we typically adjust the seats in our vehicles manually, even if we use buttons to do so, or pre-set memory settings. That’s one thing that hasn’t changed in a long time, but if this patent comes to fruition, that might change at some point in the future. Here, Ford presents us with a system that would use images of the prospective user(s) in a vehicle, after which it could automatically make adjustments to the seating arrangement to better accommodate them. The system could also store presets, making it a rather compelling idea, if it does wind up becoming a reality.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
