If you’ve ever seen a piece of over-the-top, colorful, highlight-heavy street art, chances are it’s the work of Kenny Scharf. Scharf, an influential figure in the Pop Surrealist movement, took his skills to sheet metal, spray painting random vehicles as part of his “Karbombz!” series. Now, fans of Scharf and Ford alike can add a premium diecast model that’s the best of both worlds to their collection in the form of a colorfully painted 1967 Ford Thunderbird model.
Scharf teamed up with Mattel and Hot Wheels to bring the mini 1967 Ford Thunderbird to life. The artist borrowed the head-turning surrealist livery from a real-life Karbombz! project. It features red and green space-alien-like characters over a blue backdrop, emblazoned on the full-metal silver painted chassis of the 1:64 scale model T-bird. The model features Mattel’s neo-classic wheels and a white interior, each complimenting and highlighting the atomic-age-inspired livery.
Mattel is offering two variants of this 1967 Ford Thunderbird. One is protected by a display case, which features a base colored in Scharf’s absurdist style and a clear top signed by the man himself. Just 100 examples of the autographed Thunderbird diecasts are being offered, and they’re already primed to be a collector’s item, priced at $300. Buyers who don’t want to shell out for a signed version can opt for the unsigned Thunderbird diecast, which is priced at $35.
Both models are wrapped in a custom slipcover, featuring Scharf’s artwork through and through. They also include a Certificate of Authenticity.

Other recent additions to the miniature diecast stable include the 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 made famous in the John Wick franchise, offered by Greenlight Collectibles. Collectors can also add the the Elite 64 Series Modified 1969 Ford Mustang from Hot Wheels to their collection, as well as the Spectraflame Bright Yellow 1970 Mustang Boss 302 released as part of the Hot Wheels Red Line Club series on more than one occasion.
