The Ford E-Transit Custom launched back in May 2024 as the very first all-electric version of that best-selling van, in a wide range of trims – Trend, Limited, Sport, Trail, and MS-RT, as well as configurations including panel van, double cab-in van, Kombi, and MultiCab, too. However, while customers can choose from two different outputs – 100 kW or 160 kW (133 or 214 horsepower) and 415 Nm (306 pound-feet) of torque (the MS-RT gets 210 kW or 282 horsepower) – rear-wheel drive was the only option, at least until now, as an all-wheel drive version of the Ford E-Transit Custom was just unveiled.
The Ford E-Transit Custom AWD variant is intended to better suit customers who need enhanced traction, such as those that live in places like the Nordic, Alpine, and Highlands regions of Europe, or for those that use their vans for leisure activities such as camping. Ford created an all-new AWD system for the E-Transit custom by pairing the existing rear-wheel drive layout with an additional high-power electric drive unit for the front wheels.
The two independent front and rear drive units provide optimum torque to all four wheels, maximizing traction and capability on steep inclines, and enabling enhanced vehicle dynamics, even in extremely slippery icy or muddy driving conditions. Otherwise, at least for now, Ford isn’t providing any additional details or specifications for this new configuration. We should learn more when we get close to the launch of the AWD Ford E-Transit Custom, which is scheduled for spring 2026.
Ford did reveal that the E-Transit Custom AWD will be available in a series of trims, including the more off-road focused Trail, and it will be joined by an AWD version of the E-Tourneo Custom, too. Regardless, both figure to help extend the all-electric van’s appeal, a notable move given the fact that it has already racked up its fair share of accolades over the past year-plus.
