Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Console With Movable Table

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a console with a movable table that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 21st, 2022, published on July 1st, 2025, and assigned serial number 12344148.

The Ford Authority Take

In recent years, Ford has explored all sorts of potential new interior storage solutions via many patent filings – a list that includes ideas for things like a deployable pillar mounted table, a movable center console with hidden storage space, and console table assemblies, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent presents us with a new idea in that same realm, this time, for a console with a movable table that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

This particular type of modular console would add quite a bit of functionality to the ones we’re used to seeing in new vehicles, which have historically served as places to store smaller items, use as an armrest, or as the location for some cupholders, for the most part. In this case, Ford envisions retaining those features while also adding a movable table that doubles as an armrest when not in use. Then, when one might have a need for a table – whether that be to write on, place a laptop on, or perhaps even use as a meal tray – that part would swivel outward. Thanks to its flexible connector assembly, the table could be moved in all sorts of directions as well, which could prove handy if it does indeed come to fruition.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
