The Boss is a 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine from Ford Motor used to power three-quarter ton and one-ton heavy duty trucks like the Ford Super Duty, or even cargo vans like the Ford E-Series. Featuring a single overhead cam (SOHC) and pushrod design, in a V configuration, the Boss architecture has been part of the Ford engine family since 2010. While this engine has served in a wide variety of Ford vehicles in the past, it currently only powers the Ford Super Duty.
Although the Boss engine isn’t officially categorized under Ford’s Modular engine family, it does nevertheless share design similarities such as a deep-skirt block with cross-bolted main caps, a crankshaft-driven gerotor oil pump, an overhead cam valvetrain arrangement, and a bellhousing bolt pattern.
The Boss engine was first developed for the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor as a late-availability option. A limited-edition high-output version of the 6.2 L V8 was later introduced for the Raptor as well. In 2017, the engine received new tuning and modified camshafts to bump torque so it could be better suited for use in the Super Duty line of one-ton work trucks.
