The 2021 Ford E-Series is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive chassis cab (cutaway) and stripped chassis used for commercial applications such as campers, ambulances and small buses. The E-Series sits within the Ford Motor Company’s lineup of heavy duty vehicles alongside the Ford Super Duty.
The Ford E-Series is currently the oldest vehicle sold under the Ford nameplate. Formerly called the Econoline panel and passenger vans, the E-Series was replaced by the Ford Transit. However, Ford retains the architecture for commercial use where demand remains high.
Changes, Updates, New Features
Now sold exclusively as cutaway and chassis cab configurations, the Ford E-Series sees an important update for the 2021 model year. Ford also decided to skip the 2020 model year all together in an effort to boost the residual value of older models.
Exterior
- Prominent vertical headlights with chrome grille lead to a functional and utilitarian look.
- Cutaway layout allows for open rear section to easier accommodate different applications.
- Available dual-wheel setup for increased payload applications.
Interior
- Highly functional interior with a wide variety of storage options.
- Up to four independent auxiliary switches.
- Steering-mounted transmission selector to optimize space between the two front seats.
Body Styles
The 2021 Ford E-Series is sold exclusively as a single or dual rear wheel chassis cab or stripped chassis for commercial applications. This means that the front section of the vehicle has the look of a conventional truck, but the rear is stripped from any form of body components. This allows for greater flexibility when converting the E-Series into vehicles like an RV, a bus or an ambulance. Three different wheelbases are available: 138, 158 and 176 inches.
The Ford Stripped Chassis variant has no body at all. It is essentially a frame and a drivetrain built to accommodate different body styles, such as mail trucks or other types of commercial vehicles.

Beyond 2021
While the Ford E-Series did get replaced by the Ford Transit as the brand’s official cargo van, Ford keeps this trusted workhorse within its lineup for specific requirements that call for heavier payload applications. For these reasons, the E-Series will be heavily updated for the 2021 model year.
Among the changes are the replacement of the naturally aspirated 6.8L Triton V10 for the all-new 7.3L Godzilla V8. Ford’s ten-speed automatic gearbox replaces the old six-speed unit, and the vehicle’s interior is entirely redesigned, incorporating a more modern Sync 3 infotainment interface with more up-to-date connectivity features.
