We expect the 2022 Ford Expedition to receive a mid-cycle action (aka refresh) consisting of revised styling, an additional hybrid powertrain, and updates to its interior.
Expected Changes, Updates, New Features
Here are the changes we expect for the 2022 Expedition:
- Revised exterior, including new front and rear ends
- Revised interior, including an all-new infotainment system with a large, vertically-oriented screen
- Addition of a new hybrid powertrain option, similar to what’s found in the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost
- New off-road-oriented Expedition Timberline trim
Body Styles
The 2022 Ford Expedition will continue as a full-size, three-row body-on-frame SUV with two body style configurations:
- 210-inch Ford Expedition (standard length)
- 222-inch Ford Expedition Max (extended length)
Powertrain
We expect the 2022 Expedition to continue with the Ford 3.5L EcoBoost V6 gasoline motor as the standard powerplant, possibly with some modifications to its configuration to match the higher output in the 2021 Ford F-150, where it makes 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.
Additionally, we expect Ford to introduce a hybrid option for the refreshed model, most likely the Ford 3.5L PowerBoost V6. In the 2021 Ford F-150, the engine is rated for 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque.
A 10-speed automatic will be the only transmission offered for both engines.
Models & Trim Levels
We expect the 2022 Ford Expedition and extended length Expedition Max to be offered in the following trim levels:
- XL (fleet only)
- XL STX
- XLT
- Limited
- King Ranch
- Platinum
Additionally, we expect Ford will introduce an off-road oriented trim level, dubbed Timberline, into the lineup for 2022, possibly positioned between the XLT and Limited trims.
Platform
The 2022 Ford Expedition will ride on same Ford T3 platform as the 2021 model. The Lincoln Navigator also uses the same platform.
Production
The 2022 Expedition will continue being assembled at the Ford Kentucky Truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Availability
We expect the 2022 Ford Expedition to launch in the last quarter of 2021. The updated model will likely be revealed in the summer of 2021.
Beyond 2022
We expect the 2022 Ford Expedition to represent the first year of the refreshed fourth-generation model, which Ford has produced since the 2018 model year. Given the current product cadence, we expect the refreshed model to last through the 2025 model year, which will likely represent the last year of the fourth-generation. After that, a completely redesigned Expedition would take its place.
