We expect the 2024 Ford Explorer to receive a midcycle refresh (otherwise known as a facelift or midcycle action) consisting of updated exterior styling, a revamped cockpit with new screens and a new infotainment system, improvements to the suspension, potential gains in power for the ST model, and various other changes and updates.

Below, we’ve listed what we expect from the refreshed 2024 Ford Explorer.
Model Line
- No changes, with the trim level structure continuing as Base, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, Platinum, King Ranch
Exterior
- Revamped front fascias (trim level specific) with new headlights, new grilles, and bumper treatments
- Revamped rear end with new tail lights that extend into the liftgate
- New wheel designs (for some trims)
Interior
- Revamped cockpit, complete with new infotainment screens
- Lower-end trims will feature a smaller screen while higher-end trims will feature an extra-wide, horizontally-oriented screen
- Revamped infotainment systems powered by Google software
- Various other improvements, including possible addition of more USB ports for second and third row passengers
- Possible addition of 5G connectivity to replace 4G of pre-refresh model
- The addition of Ford BlueCruise highway hands-free advanced driver assistance system
Chinese Model
- It’s worth noting that the Chinese-market Ford Explorer has already received a refresh, and it is very likely that the North American 2024 Ford Explorer will incorporate at least some of the Chinese market’s changes too, although the extent of the similarities of the changes between the Chinese-market and North American-market models is currently unclear
Mechanical
- Updates to suspension to deliver a softer, more comfortable ride
- New 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine based on the Modular Power Cylinder (MPC) architecture from the all-new, 2024 Ford Mustang
- More power from 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine in Explorer ST to bring it in line with other models that use the same engine, namely the Ford Bronco Raptor and Ford Ranger Raptor
- In the pre-refresh Explorer ST, the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 is rated at 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque
- In the Ford Bronco Raptor, the same engine is rated at 418 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque
- In the Ford Ranger Raptor, the same engine is rated at 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque
- Potential addition of active exhaust for high-performance Explorer ST model
- The Bronco Raptor features an active exhaust system as standard, allowing drivers to set the exhaust note to quiet or aggressive
Platform
- Like all sixth-gen Explorer models, the 2024 Ford Explorer will continue to ride on the Ford CD6 platform
Production
- We expect the 2024 Ford Explorer to be produced at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant, as has been the case for all sixth-generation Explorers
Availability
- Production is expected to begin in late 2023, with the first units beginning to arrive at dealers toward the end of 2023 or early 2024
