With the deletion of the Shelby GT500, the 2023 Ford Mustang is offered with a choice of three engines. The first is the turbocharged 2.3L I4 EcoBoost available in the Mustang EcoBoost. This engine is capable of a peppy 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, and can be paired with either the six-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic.
The second is the 2.3L I4 EcoBoost in the High Performance Package (HPP). Despite sharing the same displacement as the 2.3L EcoBoost used in “regular” Mustang EcoBoost models, this engine is substantially different. It features a 63-millimeter twin-scroll turbo compressor, diecast alloy block and high-performance cylinder head, coaxing 330 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from the four-cylinder. Its top speed is 155 mph, a notable 34 mph faster than the “regular” Mustang EcoBoost.
The third is the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, which is available in the Mustang GT and Mustang Mach 1. Under the hood of the GT, the eight-cylinder powerhouse produces 450 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. When outfitted in the Mach 1, its output is nudged to 470 horsepower. In both applications, this engine can be paired with either the six-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic.
