Having been the recipient of a couple large corporate “reductions in force” as the bean counters call layoffs, I can tell you that most likely those 6,000 are near retirement age or over 50 and many are offered a deal to take a nice severance package to leave earlier than planned. Often times these companies want older more costly workers, like I was, to retire and that way they can hire younger workers at lower wages than me and have lower medical costs too. Believe me, these corporations all do this kind of rationalization all the time. Some of those 6,000 will be offered a chance to move to a new plant but most people won’t move like that these days. Depending on the job level, these companies won’t pay for the move unless you are executive level kind of person. None of these details would likely be publicized at all.
