Ever wonder how well the all-new, 2017 Ford Super Duty – what with its aluminum-alloy body and fully-boxed steel frame – will hold up in a frontal collision?
We did, too, so we turned to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has just finished testing the new F-250 SuperCrew for crashworthiness. Testing for other models and cab types is forthcoming.
The NHTSA has found that the two-wheel-drive version of the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty crew cab offers slightly better crashworthiness than the 4×4, awarding the former five stars overall versus four stars for the latter. Both variants received five stars in the NHTSA’s frontal and side crash testing; it was only in rollover evaluations that the the 4×2 outshined the 4×4, earning four stars to the 4×4’s three.
If you’d like to see for yourself what five-star frontal crash test performance looks like, check out the video above, which shows the 2017 F-250 Super Duty taking a 35-mph frontal impact in stride. We can’t say it’s easy to watch.
It was recently returned closer to stock condition.
Sales increased 0.4 percent to 31,291 units during the first seven months of 2025.
Every so often, it gets something right.
