Ford Motor Company Saarlouis Body and Assembly – Saarlouis, Germany

The Ford Motor Company Saarlouis Body and Assembly plant is located in the western part of the city of Saarlouis within the Saarland state of Germany. The plant was built on a former airfield and opened its doors in 1968 as a manufacturer of body panels for Renault vehicles.

The Saarlouis Body and Assembly plant became a Ford manufacturing facility in 1970 where it oversaw the assembly of the Ford Escort. The plant currently manufacturers the European-market Ford Focus.

Historical Timeline

  • 1970: The Saarlouis plant is formally opened by Henry Ford II as an official Ford manufacturing center for Europe and no longer a body panel supplier for Renault. The plant is designed to co-produce the Ford Escort with Ford’s Halewood plant in England. The main focus is to outsell the then popular Opel Kadett in Europe.
  • 1998: Production for the Ford Focus compact car begins in Saarlouis, replacing the long-running Ford Escort. The Focus is still produced today, making it the second-longest running nameplate after the Escort to be manufactured at the facility.
  • 2019: Ford announces that it will reduce the number of shifts at Saarlouis in an effort to cut costs. This is part of Ford Europe’s restructuring plan towards electrification.
