People Thought Ford Was Moving Four Factories Back To U.S.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25 percent tariff on all imported vehicles, which took effect today, April 3rd, 2025, after which the U.S. will place levies on imported parts that don’t comply with the current United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, such as engines, transmissions, and electrical components, no later than May 3rd. As such, some automakers have reportedly mulled the idea of moving production to the U.S. – while Hyundai just announced it will do precisely that – but rumors pertaining to Ford doing the same thing simply aren’t true.

According to Snopes, a rumor began circulating last month that Ford planned on moving four assembly plants and 25,000 jobs to the U.S., which was based on a post from a satirical website and quickly spread across social media. That report even contained a fake quote, to boot. “This is exactly what we’ve been fighting for,” the article claims that Ford spokesperson Joe Barron said. “We’re making America the auto manufacturing powerhouse it used to be, just like in the good old days – back when cars were big, gas was cheap, and nobody asked questions about workplace safety.”

“We have 24 plants in the U.S., employ the most U.S. hourly employees, produce the most vehicles in America and are America’s largest vehicle exporter,” Ford spokesperson Dan Barbossa told Snopes via email, adding that Ford hasn’t made any announcements regarding the automaker’s plans to shift production.

For now, it’s unclear what Ford plans to do in response to the newly-implemented tariffs, though CEO Jim Farley did tell employees that they will impact the company “significantly.” Ford has reportedly resigned to the fact that it will have to pay tariffs on imported vehicles and major components, but it’s also lobbying to exclude lower-cost items produced in other countries. Meanwhile. the automaker launched an employee pricing plan for all of its U.S. customers earlier today, too.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

    1. Jobs with living wages. Which would produce more expensive cars than when they were in another country whose wages are NOT as high as they are in America.

    2. We have close to historic low unemployment right now. We don’t have thousands of workers that would go work for car companies.

Your lobbying will not do any good unless you commit to bring manufacturing back to the US. Barra and Farley have nobody to blame but themselves. They knew this was coming. If they pandered to Trump half as much as they did to Biden and Newsome, they would have no problems. I bet there would be no tariffs had Barra and Farley called Trump with a commitment to make 75 percent of the vehicles they sell in this country here.

  4. Hyundia had already planned to build another plant in the US because people are buying there vehicles. Remember in the 70s the great buy American slogans Well, American didn’t buy that slogan. Great Scott! Now Toyota is bragging how many manufacturers it has in the US. What’s my point? Americans weren’t buy American now Americans are crying about cars built some where else.

    1. Sometimes it’s impossible to “buy American” when the greedy and ignorant CEOs of the “American” car companies move production out of the US to the point where half of gm’s sales now come from vehicles built outside of the US.
