Restored 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster Heading To Auction

The Shelby Cobra is an iconic machine created by Carroll Shelby that quickly earned plenty of respect on the race track – as well as the streets. Offered with a couple of Ford powerplants, the Shelby 427 Cobra is by far the most powerful of the bunch, as well as the most coveted and valuable to this day. Thus, every time we see a Shelby 427 Cobra pop up for sale, it’s a notable occasion, and this restored 1966 model figures to attract its fair share of attention when it crosses the auction block soon, too.

This 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra is slated to be sold at Mecum’s Indianapolis, Indiana auction next month, and it’s purported to be one of the finest such examples sold to the public in a long time. That’s because the Cobra has been treated to a “no expenses spared concours” restoration by Legendary Motor Company, and it has lived its entire life with just two private owners thus far. It also hasn’t been modified in any way over the years, which is quite rare for a Shelby 427 Cobra – a popular model to bless with additional power and other go-fast goodies.

As one of just 155 real 427-powered “street” Cobras, it’s also quite rare – and one of only 100 such models delivered with dual-quad carburetors from the factory. It still sports its original, unmodified aluminum body, drivetrain, and chassis, none of which have ever been damaged, according to the auction listing, too. The Cobra is finished in the same red hue that it came from originally, along with its original, unrestored seats, 427 V8, Toploader four-speed manual transmission, and rear end, and it has traveled a mere 14,671 miles since new.

We’ve certainly seen some notable Shelby Cobra models hit the auction block as of late, and this one definitely deserves a spot among the finest. It joins examples including a 1963 Cobra once owned by legendary actor Steve McQueen, as well as a 1965 Competition Coupe, too.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
