As Ford Authority reported earlier this week, Ford Germany boss Christoph Herr recently told dealers that The Blue Oval is planning to add new passenger cars to its European lineup at some point, news that comes on the heels of rumors that have persisted for some time now. Such a move would mark a big turnaround for a company that has all but eliminated passenger cars from its global lineup, with just the Focus left in Europe – and currently slated to be discontinued later this year. Now, we’re learning that Ford plans to add new cars to its European lineup in the next two years or so.
“The Board of Directors has decided that we will continue to invest in new and additional vehicles in order to enable moderate growth in the passenger car sector over the next few years,” Herr said in a message to dealers seen by Automobilwoche. He added that Ford will “invest in several vehicles, some of them together with partners and also with different forms of propulsion, including hybrids and fully electric vehicles,” noting that new models will begin arriving in 2027.
Herr didn’t disclose what segments these new passenger cars will compete in, nor did he discuss details regarding those potential partnerships, but some speculation has suggested that Ford could expand its partnership with Volkswagen to bring new models to market. Previous rumors pointed to a possible Fiesta EV that would be underpinned by a smaller version of the VW MEB platform currently used in the Capri and Explorer EVs, though it’s also possible these new models could utilize Ford’s own under-development low-cost platform.
Regardless of what Ford’s new passenger cars might look like, dealers in Europe have long been clamoring for more entry-level vehicles from the automaker. FoMoCo has been working on solving what many consider to be an affordability crisis in the current market, which – at least in Europe – it believes can be solved with small cars.
