Extremely Rare 1967 Ford Mustang Up For Auction In Italy

Given the fact that the Ford Mustang is one of the most famous and iconic automotive models to ever exist, it’s no surprise that we see plenty of pony cars on the collector car auction circuit each and every day. Along with regular, run of the mill Mustangs, we also see our fair share of unique, rare, valuable, or downright quirky ones, too. That list includes the cool and rare ASC McLaren version of the pony car, but this 1967 Ford Mustang that just popped up for auction in Italy is easily one of the rarest we’ve seen in a while – if ever.

This 1967 Ford Mustang currently up for grabs at Bring a Trailer is one of just two fastbacks that was modified by Carrozzeria Zagato in Milan, Italy, when it was new, in fact. Those modifications are quite extensive, and start on the outside with a narrowed grille, a smoothed-out valance, rectangular Carello headlights, a modified bumper with turn signals mounted above it, and a revised hood with an air scoop – plus Zagato Elaborazione badges. This particular example was painted Holly Green, after it left the factory in Wimbledon White.

Inside, one will find front bucket seats that were re-trimmed in white with black inserts, though the rest of the cabin features black vinyl upholstery. Amentiies include air conditioning, a push-button AM radio, rear C-pillar vents, and a fire extinguisher. In terms of power, that comes from Ford’s 289 cubic-inch “Challenger Special” V8, which in this case features a four-barrel carburetor, stainless-steel headers, and a dual exhaust, and it’s mated to a four-speed manual transmission.

This very rare, modified 1967 Ford Mustang remained with its original owner for much of its life – until 1995, in fact – when it was sold to the current owner. It was repainted back to its original white for a while before being returned to its Holly Green hue as part of a refurbishment in 2019. Since then, it has participated in the 2021 Mille Miglia (as we can see by the decals present on the car), and it’s been featured in more than one magazine, too. Now, someone else will get the chance to own this unique piece of pony car history.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
