Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a system designed to secure items in a cargo area that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on July 18th, 2023, published on July 29th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12374176.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has been working to improve the general security of its future vehicles by exploring various interesting ideas as of late – filing patents for things like an in-cabin monitoring system and a low power secure access system. Now, this newly published patent expands that list yet again, this time, with an idea for a system designed to secure items in a cargo area that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
In this case, Ford is specifically looking to provide a more secure way to store items in the cargo area of a vehicle, with the intentions of preventing those items from being stolen. To gain access to the cargo area, users would have to first unlock the tailgate, then unlock a secondary lock holding secure items in place. The system could also utilize various authentication methods to ensure that the user is authorized to do so. In the patent, Ford gives an example of a gun rack, which would secure firearms in a way that requires multiple methods to gain access to them – from pushbutton switches to even spoken commands, opening up a world of possibilities in that regard.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
