1942 Ford Jeep GPW Heading To Auction

While many think of something like the Wrangler or a Willys when one mentions the world “Jeep,” the truth is, Ford built its own similar type of vehicle for military use a very long time ago, using plans originally created by the Bantam car company, which served a very important role in World World II. Today, the Ford Jeep GPW is a celebrated collectible that pops up at various online auctions from time to time. Now, that has happened again, as this very nice 1942 Ford Jeep GPW is set to be auctioned off soon.

This 1942 Ford Jeep GPW is slated to be sold at Mecum’s upcoming Monterey auction later this month, and it remains in solid shape with its original body still intact. On the outside, the military machine also features a newer set of tires, and a canvas top, plus accessories like a rope, shovel, fire extinguisher, and jerry can. Pretty much everything is covered in the typical military-style shade of green, along with various markings that one would expect to see on a vehicle like this, too.

Inside, one will find a basic interior, as was the case with all of these Ford Jeep GPW models. Only the basics are present here – necessary instrumentation, a steering wheel and shifter, seats, and not much else. The vehicle has been updated to utilize 12-volt electrics, however.

Mechanically speaking, this Ford Jeep GPW is powered by the 2.2L inline four-cylinder engine, mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels. That engine recently received a tune up, along with a new carb, coil, water pump, fan belt, spark plugs and wires, and upper and lower radiator hoses.

It’s been a while since we last saw a Ford Jeep GPW up for auction – this past March, when a 1945 model also went up for grabs, though that one was coming off a total restoration at the time.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
