We’ve certainly seen our fair share of cool old movie cars and wild custom vehicles that are set to be sold at Mecum’s upcoming Larry’s Legacy auction in September, and that list continues to grow. Quite a few of those lots consist of cool custom Blue Oval models, including a multi-award winning 1963 Ford Thunderbird that was built by Don Russo, who treated the wild machine to a laundry list of modifications and some truly unique custom bodywork. However, it will also be joined by this rather wild-looking 1960 Ford Fairlane, too.
This 1960 Ford Fairlane is also set to be sold at the Mecum Larry’s Legacy auction next month, and it was actually created for a very specific purpose – to serve as the vision of Atomic Age futurism. Dubbed “The Spaceliner,” this custom concept certainly fits the bill there, as it looks like something we could’ve easily seen in an old TV show from the ’60s, depicting the sort of vehicle folks back then expected we’d be riding around in in today’s world.
In this case, Turquoise Metal Flake Sparkle paint covers custom bodywork coupled with 1959 Cadillac headlights and twin electrically-actuated canopy roof panels, which were built using actual aircraft pieces. Interestingly, the passenger-side doors have been welded shut, while the driver’s side looks rather smooth with hidden door handles, to boot. The Ford Fairlane rolls on a set of steel wheels with full-size covers, which are wrapped with wide whitewall tires.
Inside, the white interior of this wild machine features signatures on the dash from legendary custom car designers Gene Winfield and Darryl Starbird. Power comes from the original 223 cubic-inch inline-six cylinder Ford engine, mated to an automatic transmission.
Back in 2017, this custom creation was selected by Paolo Pininfarina as the Judge’s Favorite at the Miami Art Basel. Now, this wild, cool, and retro-futuristic Ford Fairlane is looking for a new home, and we don’t doubt that some custom car fan will be more than happy to oblige.
