For many of us, there aren’t too many childhood memories that surpass that of the good old fashioned ice cream truck, nor the unique jingle it made to signal the fact that we were about to score some tasty treats – right in our very own neighborhood. Ice cream trucks have been around for decades to this point, and yet, continue to patrol neighborhoods to this day, serving up all kinds of goodies – particularly now, in the heat of the summer. Now, someone will get the chance to own this very special 1966 Ford F-100 ice cream truck.
That’s because this 1966 Ford F-100 Good Humor ice cream truck is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s upcoming Larry’s Legacy sale next month, paying tribute to an iconic company that began in Youngstown, Ohio back in the 1920s. It was then that a man named Harry Burt started selling his own frozen concoctions, which became so popular that he had to expand his own fleet of street vending trucks to a cool dozen, after which business really took off.
To help make those ice cream trucks stand out, Burt painted them with his own custom graphics over a clean Snow White finish, coupled with a giant freezer compartment in the rear that was intentionally shaped like a big ice cube – making it more recognizable to potential customers. This example also touts a set of painted steel wheels with hubcaps on the outside to complete the look.
Inside, one will find a single black seat up front, along with a refreshed freezer compression system, meaning that this vintage machine is still up to the task of delivery tasty frozen treats.
Power comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 240 cubic-inch inline-six cylinder engine – equipped with a modern Holley Sniper fuel injection system – and it’s mated to an automatic transmission, making for a cool and reliable ride.
