1979 Ford Mustang Daytona Concept Once Again Up For Auction

Just this past May, a 1979 Ford Mustang Daytona Concept surfaced for sale at Mecum’s Indianapolis, Indiana auction as one of just five such models built for Ford by Cars and Concepts. It’s a rather special machine, believed to be the only example of that lot that received all of the planned updates, and it’s also thought to be the only one of those five in running and driving condition. Regardless, that special pony car concept failed to meet its reserve price, and now, it’s being auctioned off on a different platform.

That platform is Bring a Trailer, where this special 1979 Ford Mustang Daytona Concept is currently up for grabs for the second time in just a few months. These concepts were originally built to help promote the all-new Fox Body pony car at the time, and this example was displayed at the 1979 New York, Chicago, and Detroit auto shows, as well as the Ford Design Center. The Mustang paced Daytona road course events before it spent roughly two decades at the Henry Ford Museum, after which it was owned by a Ford executive and featured in multiple publications.

Today, the concept looks to be in solid condition with removable T-top roof panels, a rear wiper, a smoked grille and tail panels, and Vivid Red Orange paint, coupled with polished 15-inch Ansen aluminum slot wheels. Inside, it features tan leather bucket seats, a full-length console, unique dash and door panel treatments, a Daytona badge, power locks, and a push-button AM/FM radio.

Power comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 5.0L V8, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. It breathes through a dual exhaust system fitted with Dynomax mufflers, and underneath, one will also find front and rear stabilizer bars, along with front disc and rear drum brakes.

If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see if this Ford Mustang Daytona Concept can meet its reserve price this time around, as well as just how much someone will valuate it for, given the fact that there isn’t really anything else like it out there in the world.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
