Ford technician and purveyor of the YouTube channel FordTechMakuloco, Brian Makuloco, has been churning out all sorts of informative videos over the years – many of them documenting issues and fixes for various Blue Oval-related problems. Many of these videos are focused on Ford’s EcoBoost line of engines, specifically, as well as vehicles that Makuloco is repairing for customers. However, his latest clip shows us how to easily fix a common problem with the 2006-2010 Ford Explorer.
As many owners are already well aware, one common issue with the 2006-2010 Ford Explorer stems from a hissing noise that comes from under the dash, which increases in terms of volume as one presses the gas pedal more. The root cause of this problem is actually the vacuum check valve on the engine side, which makes that particular noise when it’s failing. The hissing noise enters the cabin from the passenger side footwell area and can be quite annoying and distracting. Luckily, the problem is pretty easy and cheap to rectify.
To gain access to the vacuum check valve, one needs to open the hood and look on the passenger side of the firewall, then pull it up from the top side, as there’s enough slack in the line to do so. From there, it’s just a case of disconnecting the old vacuum check valve and then snapping the new one in place. The part number for the vacuum check valve is YG-360.
As Makuloco points out, the valves will look a bit different depending on which engine the Ford Explorer is equipped with, but the process is identical, regardless. Either the black side or blue side goes toward the line or vacuum source, which runs to the HVAC system itself. Luckily, it only takes mere minutes to replace, and the part itself retails for less than $10, to boot.
