Ford CEO Jim Farley All But Says Ford Mustang GTD Heading Back To Nürburgring

The barely street-legal 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is an absolute beast on the Nürburgring. The track-ready pony clocked a sub-seven-minute lap at the world’s most iconic racetrack, securing the fifth-fastest time ever recorded by a stock production sports car – and became the fastest American car to do it. That is, until General Motors and the C8 Corvette showed up. After being dethroned, Ford CEO Jim Farley issued a friendly challenge to The Blue Oval’s crosstown rival, suggesting that the Mustang GTD will try once again to tame the ‘Ring.

For some backstory, the Ford Mustang GTD first laid down a lap time of 6:57:685, after which it managed an even better time of 6:52.072. That record fell, however, when GM unleashed the Chevy Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X at the demanding racetrack.

The hybrid, all-wheel-drive ZR1X clocked a lap of 6:49.275, while the rear-wheel-drive, non-hybrid ZR1 pulled off a best lap of 6:50.763. Obviously, both Vettes shaved quite a bit off the Mustang GTD’s time, overtaking the track-ready pony and knocking it to eighth place in the stock production sports car standings.

When Corvette boasted about its accomplishment in a post on social media, Farley couldn’t help but offer a retort in the comments. While he didn’t explicitly state that the Ford Mustang GTD will head back to Nürburgring, his intent is crystal clear.

“Congrats to the Corvette team,” he wrote. “Game on!”

As a reminder, the Ford Mustang GTD harnesses a supercharged 5.2L V8 engine, good for 815 horsepower a top track speed of 202 mph. Comparatively, the Corvette ZR1 uses a twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 engine, delivering 1,064 horsepower and 828 pound-feet of torque for a top speed in excess of 200 mph. The hybrid Corvette ZR1X, meanwhile, boasts 1,250 combined horsepower, making it capable of achieving zero to 60 mph in under two seconds. In short, the Vette ZR1 twins are a formidable competitor to the Mustang GTD – and Farley is clearly up for the challenge.

  5. We have a 25 Explorer ST. Just had it 1st birthday today. As far as I am concerned Mr. Farley did quite a great job with Quality #1 at Chicago assembly. Not one issue with the vehicle, not a single recall. The vehicle is fantastic. We’ve had more new vehicles over the years than anyone should and this Ford is at the top now for zero issues.
