It’s no secret that Ford’s all-electric Model e business has been losing money since its inception, which is true for most automakers dabbling in pure electrification these days, in general. That’s precisely why The Blue Oval is pivoting away from its previous strategy and more toward smaller, affordable EVs, rather than large, pricier ones. Now, Ford will be diverting some of its EV funding to a much more profitable business as well – the Ford Pro commercial entity.
“To accelerate that progress over our multi-year business plan, we are shifting capital towards Pro, funded by reallocating the resources on future EV programs,” Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed during the automaker’s Q2 2025 earnings call with investors.
As Ford Authority reported yesterday, FoMoCo recently opted to push back the debut of its next-generation all-electric full-size pickup and van – likely new versions of the Ford F-150 Lightning and E-Transit – to 2028. Previously, the next-generation E-Transit was slated to enter production in 2026, while the new EV pickup has been delayed on multiple occasions. Codenamed Project T3, that model was originally expected to enter production this year, but was later pushed back to 2026, then 2027, and now, 2028.
Now, Ford has shifted its focus to new EVs riding on its under-development low-cost platform, including a “super affordable” mid-size pickup and a small crossover, which are slated to arrive in 2027 and 2028, respectively. The automaker will make a major EV-related announcement in Kentucky next week – which Farley refers to as a “Model T moment” for the company – though it’s unclear what that announcement will consist of.
As Ford Authority previously reported, the Louisville Assembly plant in Kentucky is scheduled to undergo a major retooling late this year as it’s prepped for the production of an all-new electric vehicle, believed to be the new mid-size pickup, as well as potentially the crossover that will follow.
