As Ford Authority recently reported, General Motors was previously mulling the idea of suppling Hyundai with mid-size pickups – enabling that company to sell its own version of the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon in North America as a direct Ford Ranger rival. This, in addition to Hyundai potentially rebadging full-size pickups, while GM is also interested in that company’s electric vans, and the two are teaming up on a parts purchasing endeavor as well. Now, it seems as if Hyundai will in fact be selling a Ranger rival very soon.
According to GM Authority, GM and Hyundai has announced that the two companies will be co-developing a grand total of five different models – a commercial all-electric van for the North American market, while Central and South America will be getting a compact SUV, a small passenger car, compact pickup, and a mid-size pickup, which will utilize either ICE or hybrid powertrains. GM will lead development of the mid-size pickup, while all five models will share quite a lot in common in an effort to streamline production and reduce costs.
While these vehicles will share platforms and many other components, each will feature its own unique styling cues and equipment in an effort to differentiate them, as is often the case with these types of mashups. All five are set to launch in 2028, with the expectation that cumulative sales could total 800,000 units once the group has entered full-scale production.
As Ford Authority reported last September, General Motors and Hyundai signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding agreement with the intentions of exploring future collaborations across key strategic areas. The two companies are also aiming to collaborate on the co-development and production of both retail and commercial vehicles, as well as internal combustion engines, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and EVs.
